As consumers, we want our voices to be heard and our views acknowledged. We want to share how wonderful or how terrible something is by writing product reviews on the Internet.

But how can you write a product review without sounding like a corporate shill or an overtly negative individual?

1. Stay on topic and focus on the product

Keep in mind that when you are writing a product review, the focus of your review is on the product, and not you.

  • What features does the product have?

  • Does the product serve its function?

Many people often get carried away with talking about their emotions instead of answering these fundamental questions. As you are writing your very own product review, always keep in mind that a review that centres around the product will ultimately triumph over one that doesn’t.

2. List both pros and cons

Professionally written product reviews are upfront about a product’s benefits and flaws.

As for reviews that are positively or negatively skewed?

They can lower your credibility as readers may misinterpret your intentions behind the written piece.

Extremely positive-sounding product reviews often get people thinking that you were paid to put the company in a favourable light, while extremely negative reviews are sometimes seen as remarks by competitor brands aimed at hurting the product’s reputation.

3. Provide your own thoughts about the product

To help others connect with your product review, share some examples of your interaction with the product.

Some insights you can share in your product review could be about these topics:

  • Was it easy to install/use the product?

  • Does the product look as pictured in advertisements?

  • Was the price reasonable for the quality of the product?

  • Was the product able to withstand varying environment conditions?

4. Attach images or videos to your product review

If you have difficulty expressing yourself in words, consider using images or videos to illustrate your point. Don’t forget to include some text below them to give your readers an idea of what they should be looking out for!
